REVIEW
 Metoprolol succinate is the extended-release formulation of the active substance metoprolol, a selective beta1 receptor blocker used in treatment of several cardiovascular diseases. It is used for a number of conditions including hypertension, angina, acute myocardial infarction, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, congestive heart failure, and prevention of migraine headaches. Metoprolol competes with adrenergic neurotransmitters such as catecholamines for binding at cardiac beta1 receptors, resulting in a decrease in heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. Due to its selectivity for cardiac beta1 receptors, metoprolol is also prescribed for anxiety disorders.
